The AI Writing Assistant helps you formulate text: It writes, improves, translates or changes the tone of text. You can find it in the editor for a task’s description and in the editor for comments. This article explains how to open it, what it can do and how descriptions and comments differ.
Please note
The Writing Assistant is one of the AI features. It is available when AI is enabled in the workspace and you are allowed to see AI features. Each request uses credits—only a few for short texts; see How AI credits work. AI can make mistakes. Read the result before using it further.
Open the Writing Assistant
- Open a task and click in the
Descriptionor in theEnter comment herefield. The editor toolbar appears. - In the toolbar, click the magic wand icon (to the right of the plus sign).
The How can I help? window (“I can formulate or improve text”) opens. If you select text in the editor, a small toolbar with the same magic wand icon also appears directly next to the selected text.
What the Writing Assistant can do
In the description
-
Generate: AI writes a description based on the task data. This action is only available when no text is selected. -
Improve: AI revises the language of the text without changing its content. -
Translate: AI translates the text into another language. Almost 50 languages are available. At first, the menu shows only eight common languages:English,German,French,Italian,Dutch,Polish,CzechandTurkish. You can find all other languages viaMore…; theSearch language…field is available there. -
Rephrase: AI rewrites the text, with the optionsMore concise / Shorter,More formalorFriendlier. -
Custom instruction: In the
Ask smenso…field, describe in your own words what AI should do, for example, “Rewrite the description in German and add a list with three delivery instructions.” You can submit it withEnteror the arrow. UseAttachto add PDFs or images for AI to analyse.
In comments
In the comment editor, the Writing Assistant offers Improve, Translate, Rephrase and the field for custom instructions, just as in the description. Instead of Generate, there are two actions suitable for commenting:
-
Suggested reply: AI suggests a reply to the discussion. -
Check tone: AI assesses your draft without changing it. The result appears as aTone checkcard above the editor. If the tone is appropriate, it might say, for example, “The comment is factual, clear and respectful.” If a draft seems abrupt, AI explains why and provides an alternative under More diplomatic version. UseApply versionto replace your draft with this version. The card is labelled “Only visible to you · others can’t see this” and can be copied, regenerated, collapsed or closed.
More information about the other AI features for comments, such as AI actions in the comments section, is available in the article How smenso AI works.
Edit the entire text or just one section
- Without a selection, the action applies to the entire text in the editor.
- With a selection, AI edits only the selected section; the rest remains unchanged. A note in the window (“… selected”) indicates which text is meant. Click the × symbol to remove the restriction.
Apply the result
The Writing Assistant inserts the result directly into the editor, replacing the edited text. There is no separate step for applying it. The window remains open so that you can immediately choose the next action, such as Improve followed by Translate.
-
Undo: Press
Ctrl+Zto undo the change. - Description: A new version of the description is only saved, as usual, when you leave the task dialog. This applies regardless of whether the change was made by AI or by you. You can find earlier versions via version history; see Version history for the description field in tasks.
-
Comment: The text remains a draft until you click
Comment. ClickDiscardto delete it.
Note
AI only uses content that you have access to and only becomes active when you start it. For more information about how your data is handled, see How smenso AI works.

FAQ
Does the Writing Assistant replace my text immediately?
Yes. The result appears directly in the editor and replaces the edited text; if text is selected, only the selected section is replaced. Press Ctrl + Z to undo the change.
Who can see the tone check?
Only you. The Tone check card is labelled “Only visible to you · others can’t see this” and does not appear in the published comment.
Why is Generate missing?
This action is only available in the description and only when no text is selected. In the comment editor, Suggested reply and Check tone are available instead.
