In the Gantt view, you can plan and edit the tasks, milestones, and phases of a project on a shared timeline. This allows you to identify schedules, overlaps, and dependencies directly in the context of the entire project plan.
Gantt uses the same tasks as the other project views. Changes to tasks, start dates, or due dates are therefore immediately reflected in the list view, the board, the timeline, and other areas.
View and edit tasks
The tasks, milestones, and phases of the project are listed on the left side of the Gantt chart. They are displayed on the timeline to the right.
Click a task in the task list or the corresponding bar to open the task details and edit the task.
Depending on your permissions and the respective task, additional actions are available in a task’s context menu.
Adjust start, end, and duration
The start date, due date, and duration of a task can be adjusted directly in Gantt.
- Drag the entire task bar to the left or right to move the task to a different time. The task duration remains unchanged.
- Drag the beginning or end of the bar to change the time period and therefore the duration of the task.
- Depending on the columns shown, you can also edit the start date, due date, and duration directly in the task list.
Note
Dependencies and date constraints can affect when a task can be scheduled. Automatic scheduling is available for a complete recalculation of the schedule.
Move tasks
Tasks can be moved using drag and drop. This applies to both individual tasks and multiple tasks at the same time. To move multiple tasks, first select the desired tasks, hold down the Shift key, and drag the tasks to the new position.
Tasks without dates
Tasks without a start date or due date do not yet have a displayable time period and therefore do not appear as bars on the timeline.
Assign the task a start date and due date to schedule it in Gantt. You can set the dates directly in the task list, in the task details, or using the corresponding scheduling function in Gantt.
Create new tasks
New tasks can be created directly from the Gantt view.
- Click
Newin the top right or use the function for creating a task at the desired position in the task list. - Enter a name and add the required task information.
- Set the start and due date so that the task is displayed directly on the timeline.
Create and visualize dependencies
Dependencies show which tasks or milestones build on one another over time. They are displayed in Gantt as connection lines between the bars.
Tasks can be linked using the following dependency types:
- Finish-to-Start
- Start-to-Start
- Finish-to-Finish
- Start-to-Finish
The corresponding dependency type is created depending on which start or end points of the bars are connected. A link can also include a positive lag or a negative lead.
Dependencies can be managed graphically by connecting the task bars or via the Blocked by and Blocks fields.
Move the mouse pointer over a task to highlight its dependencies directly. The associated connection lines become visible, and an information window provides a compact overview of which tasks are linked as predecessors or successors. This allows you to trace dependencies without opening the task.
Phases and milestones
In addition to regular tasks, Gantt also displays milestones and summary phase bars.
- Milestones mark important events or fixed dates within the project.
- Phase bars summarize the time periods of the tasks they contain.
- Phases can also be linked to other tasks, milestones, or phases using dependencies.
Compress tasks
For extensive project plans, the task display can be compressed. This arranges the tasks more compactly on the timeline without changing their dates.
The compressed display is particularly helpful when many tasks run in parallel or when a larger project section needs to be viewed together.
Color options for task bars
Task bars can be highlighted using colors. Under Color options, you define which information is used to color the tasks.
This makes it easier to distinguish between different status values, responsibilities, or other characteristics in the schedule.
Compare schedule versions using baselines
With baselines, you can save a version of the schedule and compare it with the current plan later.
To do this, open the Baselines section in the toolbar and select the desired schedule version. The saved dates are displayed as additional reference lines alongside the task bars.
This allows you to immediately see which tasks have been moved, extended, or shortened since the saved schedule version.
Note
Gantt is a view of the project’s existing tasks. Changes to tasks, dates, or dependencies are therefore applied not only in Gantt, but directly throughout the entire project.
