The Portfolio Timeline helps you view multiple projects on a shared timeline and recognize time-related relationships more quickly. In this article, you’ll learn how to customize the view and which features are available for navigation, filtering, and detailed inspection.
Filters, sorting, and display
Various options are available above the timeline to adjust the view to your requirements.
-
Projects
Define which projects should be displayed in the Portfolio Timeline. By default, all projects are displayed.
-
Filter
Narrow down the displayed projects specifically.
-
Sort
Adjust the order of the displayed projects, for example by time-based criteria.
-
View
Use saved views to quickly recall recurring settings.
This allows you to narrow down the Portfolio Timeline to the projects and time periods that are relevant for your evaluation.
Navigate in the timeline
The Portfolio Timeline can be viewed at different levels of detail. Using the zoom controls, you can adjust the time scale and switch between a more compact or a more detailed display.
-
Time unit
Depending on the setting, the timeline can be displayed, for example, on a monthly basis. Using the zoom indicator and the+and-buttons, you can zoom in or out of the timeline.
-
Go to today
Using theGo to todayfunction, the view jumps directly to the current date. This lets you quickly return to today’s time period without having to scroll through the timeline manually.
-
Navigate in the timeline
Using the overview in the bottom left, you can move around the Portfolio Timeline more quickly. The highlighted section shows which part of the timeline is currently visible in the main view. You can move this section to jump directly to another area of the timeline.
-
Big Picture
With Big Picture, you can additionally display the timeline view of the selected projects within the Portfolio Timeline. The tasks of the projects become directly visible in the Portfolio Timeline. This allows you to see not only the timing of projects within the portfolio, but also the time distribution of the contained tasks. This makes it easier to assess project progressions, overlaps, and dependencies across multiple projects.
This is especially helpful if you want to view both long-term project progressions and shorter time periods.
Note
In Big Picture, the tasks of the selected projects are displayed as well. This can make the display more detailed than the pure portfolio overview.
Compressed view
For a better overview, tasks in Big Picture can be compressed.
In combination with the Connection and milestone lines option, this feature provides a clear overview of all dependencies.
Note
In the Portfolio Timeline, “sticky” grouping is applied. This allows you to keep the projects in view horizontally at all times, no matter how far you scroll.
You can find more information about useful shortcuts in the article Key combinations in the timeline.
