In all views of smenso, there are ways to sort content. This applies to both projects and tasks as well as times and their respective views. The following describes the different ways to sort.
Sorting tasks in list and Gantt views
By default, a view has no sort order, meaning manual sorting is enabled. For more information on how manual sorting works, see below.
If you want to apply a sort order to a field (a standard field or a flavor), there are two options:
Using the Sort
icon
- Hover over a column heading to reveal the sorting icon and the icon for more options.
- Select the sorting icon to sort by the column.
- It first sorts in Descending order. If you want to change the sort direction to Ascending, click the sorting icon again.
- An arrow icon indicates how the column is currently sorted.
Through the column's options menu
- Hover over a column heading to reveal the sorting icon and the icon for more options.
- Select the icon for more options
- Select
Add sorting
in the options menu
If a sort order is applied, this is indicated in the column header in color and additionally with an interactive button. Sort orders can also be removed directly using this button, to return to manual sorting.
Removing sorting in task lists
To remove an active sort order in a task list, there are two options:
- In the
Sort applied
button, select thex
- Open the options menu of a column and choose either
Remove sorting
or thex
.
Note
By removing a sort, you return to the manual sort in the corresponding view.
Sorting task lists by multiple fields
Simply add a sort via the context menu of another column.
If sorted by multiple fields, multiple sort symbols will also be displayed in the column headers with the corresponding sort order and sort direction.
In the following example, a list is first sorted by Priority
, then by Assigned
, then by Start date
.
The sort order can be adjusted in the options menu of a column using drag & drop. All sorts or individual sorts can also be removed using the x
.
Sorting tasks in board views
The sorting of tasks in the columns of the board views can be changed via the sorting menu. The following sorts are available:
Manual
: Tasks are sorted manually. Tasks can be dragged & dropped within a column to different positions and retain this position in the project from then on.Alphabetically
: Tasks are sorted Alphabetically ascending.Due date
: Tasks are sorted by Due date descending.Start date
: Tasks are sorted by Start date descending.
Manual Sorting of Tasks
Manual sorting is the default in list, board, and Gantt views. This means that tasks are sorted manually by default when you access any of these views (previously, all tasks were sorted alphabetically by title in all views).
This means that unless a custom saved view with a specific sorting is set as the default, the manual sorting of tasks in the project will always be displayed.
Whenever a view is manually sorted, a notification is displayed at the top right corner of the list:
Important Notes about Manual Sorting
- The manual sorting of tasks is saved on a per-project and per-selected grouping basis. Even if you sort by a specific field, the manual sorting will still be saved. You can always return to manual sorting by removing the active sorting.
- smenso remembers the manual sorting individually for each selected grouping option in the following groupings:
Folder
None
Status (Default)
Status (Workflows)
Assigned
Priority
- The initial state of the manual sorting is ascending alphabetical when no manual sorting has been performed in a project.
- The manual sorting is not saved in custom views. It applies to the project and selected grouping. This means that if someone changes the position of a task on a board or list, it will be visible to all members who access the project with the same grouping option (e.g., grouped by folder).
Drag & Drop of Tasks in Lists & Gantt
When you hover over a row, the grab and drag symbol for a task appears on the left side. Click and drag the task to any position within the group or to another group. A blue line indicates the exact position where the task will be inserted.
Drag & Drop of Tasks on the Board
Drag & drop works as before on the board, but now the position of a task within a column is also saved if the sorting is set to Manual
.
Sorting in Lists & Gantt
Sortings of a column are added as before using the symbols in the column headers. Alternatively, you can add a sorting through the context menu of a column header.
When a sorting is applied, it is now displayed in color and additionally with an interactive button in the column header. This button can be used to remove the sorting and return to manual sorting.
Moving Tasks by Drag & Drop to Other Groupings
When manual sorting is applied, tasks can be repositioned by drag & drop within the same grouping or moved to another grouping. The target grouping does not need to be expanded - tasks can be dropped onto a collapsed grouping as well.
Moving Tasks with Active Sorting
When a sorting is active, drag & drop within the same group is disabled. However, the drag & drop symbol is still available because moving to another group is always possible.
A 🚫 symbol indicates disabled drag & drop. If a task is still dropped, an additional dialog will notify about it.
Exceptions
- Manual sorting is currently only available in list, board, and Gantt views within projects.
- Manual sorting is not available in the timeline, My Tasks (Board) view, and All Tasks (List) view.
- Manual sorting is not available in the project list (portfolio).
Sorting Projects in the Project List (Portfolio)
The displayed columns in the project list can be standard fields or flavors.
- Hover over a column header to display the sorting symbol and the symbol for additional options.
- Click the sorting symbol to sort by the column.
- Initially, it is sorted in descending order. To change the sort direction to ascending, click the sorting symbol again.
- An arrow symbol indicates the current sorting direction of the column.
