Apply project templates

A project template can be used in two ways: You can create a brand new project directly from a template, or You can update an already existing project with a template's master data. To learn how to define a project template, see the article Managing Project Templates.

Creating a new project from a project template

When creating a project, You can choose whether to start from scratch ("Empty project") or to start with an existing project template.

Create a project from a project template as follows:

1. Select the + New project button in the main navigation on the left.
2. Select Use template / Choose from templates.
   
   
3. Select a project template from the list of templates.
   
   
4. In a few steps, the wizard guides You through project creation based on Your selected project template. These fields are required:
   • Project name
   • Project type
   • Project folder
     
     
5. In the next step, choose whether to take over the start date from the template or select new dates for the project. With Choose new dates, You can set either a new start date or a new end date. The respective other date is automatically calculated based on the tasks contained in the template. The start and due dates of the tasks are adjusted accordingly.
   
   
6. Select which properties from the project template should be carried over into the new project. You can either take over everything 1:1, or make a custom selection.
   
   
7. Select the project's visibility (Open or Private).
   
   
8. In the last step, You can also choose whether to initially create the project as inactive, whether to set Yourself as a watcher right away, and whether You want to jump into the project (i.e. the new project opens directly).
   
   

Applying a project template to an existing project

In project management, existing projects can be updated with a project template. Certain data fields can be applied without overwriting existing content. This allows for a quick and efficient adjustment of projects based on a template.

What is applied from the template?

Only the master data of the project template is applied to the existing project. This includes:

• Default fields
• Flavors & flavor groups

Tasks and other structures from the project template are not applied.

Opening project settings

To apply a project template to an existing project, You first need to open the project settings.

1. Open the desired project.
2. Click the three-dot menu (...) in the top right.
3. Select Manage project.

In the Master data section, You'll find the Manage templates button in the top right, which lets You select an existing project template.

Selecting and applying a project template

1. Select Import everything or Custom.
2. If Custom was selected, mark the desired data fields.
3. Optionally enable the Overwrite values setting if existing values should be replaced.
4. Click Apply to apply the template.

Overwrite values

If the Overwrite values option is enabled, existing values in the project are replaced by the values contained in the template. If disabled, existing values are preserved.

Example

Suppose You have a project with 5 flavors, but You've since added 5 more flavors to the project template. After applying the template, Your project will consequently have 10 flavors, and this adjustment is applied including the flavor groups and assignments, exactly as they are defined in the template.
