With baselines, you can save important planning states of a project and compare them with the current schedule later.
A baseline saves a snapshot of the start and due dates, durations, and milestones at the time it is created. This allows you to track how your project schedule has changed over time.
Baselines are available in the Gantt view. You can save multiple planning states, compare them with the current schedule, and restore a previous planning state if needed.
Creating a baseline
Open the Gantt view of your project and click Baselines in the toolbar.
Then select New baseline to save the current planning state.
Enter a name for the baseline. A name containing the current date is suggested automatically.
Click Save to create the baseline.
The saved baseline then appears in the overview. Its name, creation date, and the number of included tasks are displayed.
You can create multiple baselines, for example after a project schedule has been approved or at the beginning of a new project phase.
Displaying and comparing saved baselines
Open Baselines again in the Gantt view. Here you can find your previously saved planning states.
Select the desired baseline using the checkbox. The saved schedule is then displayed alongside the current schedule in the Gantt view.
You can display up to three baselines simultaneously.
If start or due dates have changed since a baseline was saved, you can compare these changes directly with the previous planning state.
To do this, hover over the corresponding task. The current schedule, the saved baseline dates, and the time difference are displayed.
Restoring a baseline
If you want to return to a previous planning state, you can restore a saved baseline.
Open Baselines in the Gantt view and click the three-dot menu next to the desired baseline.
Then select Restore.
A confirmation dialog appears, explaining that the saved start and due dates, durations, and milestone properties of the tasks will be restored.
Click Restore to confirm.
The saved planning values are then applied to the corresponding tasks. A confirmation message appears once the baseline has been successfully restored.
Important: Restoring a baseline resets the saved start and due dates, durations, and milestone properties of tasks that still exist. Tasks created after the baseline was saved remain in the project. Previously deleted tasks are not restored.
For older baselines created before the restore feature was introduced, the Restore option is not available.
Renaming and deleting baselines
You can manage saved baselines using the three-dot menu.
Select Rename to change the name of an existing baseline.
Select Delete to remove a baseline you no longer need.
Deleting a baseline removes the saved planning state but does not delete any tasks from the project.
Best Practice
We recommend saving baselines at important points during a project, for example after a project schedule has been approved or before making major changes to the schedule.
This allows you to compare the original planning state with the current schedule at any time and track schedule changes more easily.
Use descriptive names for your baselines so that different planning states can be easily identified later.
