Edit tasks in the timeline view

In the Portfolio Timeline, you can display not only the projects but also the tasks they contain on a shared timeline. This gives you a more detailed insight into the scheduling of the selected projects.

The tasks are displayed using the Big Picture function. Without Big Picture enabled, the Portfolio Timeline mainly shows the timing of the projects.

Display tasks using Big Picture

To display the tasks of the selected projects in the Portfolio Timeline, enable Big Picture.

1. Under Projects, open the Timeline.
2. Use Projects to select the projects you want to view.
3. Enable Big Picture.

The tasks of the selected projects are then additionally displayed on the shared timeline.

This makes tasks, milestones, and existing dependencies visible, among other things.

Open a task

Click a task in the timeline to open the corresponding task details.

There, you can edit the task as usual and view additional information.

Depending on the available functions, you can access additional actions via a task's context menu.

Move tasks on the timeline

Tasks with a start date and due date can be moved directly on the timeline.

To do this, drag the task to the desired position using drag & drop. The task's time period is shifted accordingly.

Adjust start, end, and duration

You can change a task's time period directly in the timeline. To do this, drag the beginning or end of the task bar to the desired date.

This adjusts the start date or due date and changes the task's duration accordingly.

Move multiple tasks together

Multiple tasks can be selected and then moved together.

To do this, select the desired tasks and hold down Shift while making additional selections. You can then move the selected tasks together using drag & drop.

The tasks do not need to be directly dependent on one another.

Dependencies between tasks

Existing dependencies between tasks are displayed as connection lines in Big Picture.

This allows you to see across projects which tasks are linked to one another in terms of timing or content.

Dependency lines can highlight different states. For example, they can indicate when a subsequent task does not align with the existing dependency in terms of timing.

Display tasks in a compressed view

If many tasks are displayed, you can compress the view. This arranges the planning elements more closely together and requires less space.

The compressed display is particularly useful when viewing multiple projects simultaneously using Big Picture.

In combination with the connection and milestone lines, this provides a compact overview of tasks and dependencies even for more extensive project plans.
