Project Analysis

Project analysis helps evaluate projects based on consistent criteria and compare them across projects. This makes it possible to assess strategic contribution, urgency, or other evaluation criteria together and compare them in the portfolio analysis.

Define evaluation criteria for projects

Consistent evaluation criteria provide the basis for a comparable project analysis. Flavors can be used in the project master data and maintained according to the same system across all relevant projects.

Possible criteria include, for example:

• Strategic contribution
• Urgency
• Risk
• Process quality
• Other project-specific evaluation criteria

In this example, the Flavors “Analyse: Strategie” and “Analyse: Dringlichkeit” are used. Both criteria are evaluated on a scale from 1 to 9, where 1 represents a low rating, 5 a medium rating, and 9 a high rating.

Maintaining the criteria consistently across all projects being considered provides a common basis for the subsequent cross-project analysis.

Configure project analysis in the Bubble Chart

For cross-project analysis, the evaluated projects can be displayed in the portfolio analysis under Projects → Analysis, for example using a Bubble Chart.

The Bubble Chart allows different project information and Flavors to be combined. The following configuration is used in this example:

• X-axis: Analyse: Dringlichkeit
• Y-axis: Analyse: Strategie
• Value: Plan effort

Strategy and urgency determine the position of a project in the chart. Plan effort adds another dimension and is represented by the size of the respective bubble.

Compare projects across the portfolio

In the completed Bubble Chart, the projects are positioned according to their ratings. This makes different combinations of strategic importance and urgency visible at a glance.

At the same time, the bubble size can be used to include an additional metric in the analysis. In this example, it represents the planned effort of the projects.

The displayed criteria can be adapted depending on the respective use case. Other suitable project information or Flavors can also be used for the analysis.

Best Practice

• Use consistent evaluation criteria and rating scales for comparable projects.
• Choose criteria that are actually relevant to the respective decision or analysis.
• Update the ratings regularly so that the analysis reflects the current project status.
• Use the bubble size for an additional metric that meaningfully complements the comparison.
• Use project analysis to support the joint evaluation and prioritization of projects.
